Amigurumi : All the Yarn that Matters

“Ah, Amigurumi! If you have landed on this page and want to find out more about this crocheted hype, congratulations. You are about to begin your journey into creative cuteness.”

Amigurumi (pronounced as it is spelled), is the Japanese craft of crocheting small, adorable toys. The Japanese have been crocheting toys from as early as the 17th century. Almost anything goes; animals (all-time favorite), food (also very popular) and dolls (another favorite, but hard!). This, together with the Japanese concept of kawaii (meaning adorable cuteness), has spawned a whole industry of colorful ready-made critters, DIY patterns and tutorials that has been growing steadily in popularity since the 1970s.

Depending on their skill and creativity, crocheters make amigurumis of simple easter eggs, their pet cat, the cartoon character on tv, their cactus or even the sandwich they had at breakfast! You don’t have to be an expert crocheter, amigurumis basically need only one stitch- the all important single crochet. Master that and you are all set!

Making one small cute toy is also less time-consuming and requires less effort (and therefore more relaxing) than say, knitting a sweater. Spend 3 hours and you have a new friend to display on your shelf. Who doesn’t want that?

Besides being easy to learn and relatively fast to make, amigurumi crocheting is also wallet-friendly (cheap!). All you need is a ball of yarn, a crochet hook and a good imagination. Well, if you only have a ball of yarn and a hook, there are still plenty of patterns you can follow to create your own adorable friend. And if you do not even own a ball or yarn and a crochet hook, fear not, there are always readily available crochet kits. These kits come with hooks, yarn, needles, plastic eyes, nose and pattern instructions, a one-stop for everything  you need to start your new hobby. So while you are here, why not start browsing our store for all things kawaii!
